Description

🌾 Whitetail Institute Whitetail Oats – 45 lb

✅ Basic info

  • Bag size: 45 lb

  • Coverage: about ½ acre (typical oat rate)

  • Type: annual (cool-season grain)

  • Use: fast, early-season deer attractant

🌿 What it is

  • Pure or mostly forage oats (Avena sativa)

  • No big mix—just a single grain crop

👉 Compared to Oats Plus:

  • Oats = basic, cheaper, simple

  • Oats Plus = “premium” sweeter, slightly more cold‑tolerant blend

🦌 Why oats work (any brand)

  • Deer love cereal grains—especially oats

  • Often one of the most preferred foods in fall

  • High in:

    • Protein (can exceed 25%)

    • Digestibility (easy for deer to convert to energy)

👉 That’s why oats get hammered early season.

🔥 Key benefits

  • Extremely fast growth

  • Cheap to plant per acre

  • Pulls deer in quickly

  • Works great as:

    • stand-alone plot

    • nurse crop (with clover)

⚠️ Downsides

  • Lower cold tolerance

    • Often dies after hard freeze in northern states

  • Can get wiped out fast if deer density is high

  • Doesn’t last all season by itself

👉 This is early-season “attraction food”, not a full-season solution.

📅 When to plant

  • Best planted late summer → early fall

📍 Michigan timing:

  • Aug 15 → early Sept (ideal window)

👉 If you plant too early:

  • Gets tall + less attractive by hunting season

🌱 Planting basics

1. Prep

  • Disk/till

  • Kill weeds

  • Target pH: 6.0–7.0

2. Seed

  • Broadcast evenly

  • Cover lightly:

    • ½–1 inch deep

3. Fertilize

  • ~200–400 lbs of 17‑17‑17 per acre if no soil test

👍 Best uses

✅ Cheap large plots
✅ Early bow season attraction
✅ Mixing with:

  • clover

  • brassicas (radish, turnips)

✅ Filling out bigger acreage quickly
