Description

🌱 Whitetail Institute Sunn Hemp – 7 lb

This one is kind of a hybrid between PowerPlant and Revive—it feeds deer and improves your soil at the same time.

✅ Basic info

  • Size: 7 lb

  • Coverage: ~¼ acre

  • Type: warm-season annual (spring/summer)

  • Main use:

    • ✅ summer forage + cover

    • ✅ soil builder

🌿 What it is

  • A legume plant (sunn hemp)

  • Not marijuana (no THC)

👉 It’s grown specifically for:

  • food plots

  • cover crops

  • soil improvement

🦌 What it does (this is why it’s popular)

💪 1. High-protein summer food

  • About 25–30% protein

  • Good for:

    • antler growth

    • does/fawns

👉 Similar role to:

  • soybeans

  • peas

🌱 2. FAST growth

  • Grows:

    • 4–6 ft in Michigan

  • Can grow an inch per day

👉 You get:

  • quick green plot

  • fast attraction

🌲 3. Creates cover

  • Thick, tall stand = secure bedding area

  • Deer feel safe → more daylight movement

🌾 4. Major soil boost

  • Adds 100+ lbs nitrogen per acre

  • Improves:

    • poor soil

    • compaction

    • organic matter

👉 Works kinda like Revive… but faster AND edible

🛡️ 5. Handles pressure

  • Keeps growing after browsing

  • Dense growth helps prevent wipe‑out

📅 When to plant (Michigan)

  • Late spring → early summer

  • Window:

    • May → June

👉 Must have:

  • Soil temps 65°F+

  • At least 8–12 weeks frost-free

🌱 How to plant

  1. Light till or expose soil

  2. Broadcast seed

  3. Cover lightly (¼–½")

  4. Plant before rain

👉 Easier than beans

🟢 Best uses

✅ GREAT for:

  • Small–medium summer plots

  • Poor soil

  • Adding nitrogen

  • Screening (visual barriers)

  • Mixing with other crops

❌ NOT ideal for:

  • Fall-only hunting plots

  • heavy shade

🔥 Best way to use Sunn Hemp (killer setups)

OPTION 1 — Mix it with PowerPlant

👉 This is gold

  • Adds extra nitrogen

  • Improves growth of beans/peas

  • Makes plot even thicker and taller

OPTION 2 — Run it as a “cheap PowerPlant”

  • Plant straight sunn hemp in smaller plots

  • Still get:

    • protein

    • cover

    • soil improvement

OPTION 3 — Use as transition crop

  • Spring:

    • plant Sunn Hemp

  • Late summer:

    • overseed with oats/peas

👉 Gives you:

  • early + mid + late season food

OPTION 4 — Screen your stand

  • Plant strips along edges

  • Creates:

    • visual barrier

    • hidden entry/exit routes

💡 Pro tips

  • Mow or knock it down in late summer → plant fall crop right into it

  • Works well on poor ground where beans struggle

  • Mix with clover or peas for better variety

👍 Bottom line

Sunn Hemp = one of the most underrated plots you can plant

  • Feeds deer ✔

  • Builds soil ✔

  • Creates cover ✔

  • Easy to grow ✔

👉 If PowerPlant is the big field king…
👉 Sunn Hemp is the versatile do-everything plant
