Description

Bloomsdale Long Standing Spinach Seed (Spinacia oleracea) is a classic heirloom spinach variety prized for its savoyed (crinkled) leaves, rich flavor, and improved tolerance to bolting.

🌱 Variety Overview

  • Type: Savoy (crinkled‑leaf) spinach

  • Leaf Color: Deep dark green

  • Days to Maturity: ~40–50 days

  • Growth Habit: Compact rosette

  • Flavor: Rich, sweet, classic spinach taste

  • Use: Fresh salads, sautéing, freezing, steaming

✅ Why Grow Bloomsdale Long Standing

  • Slow to bolt compared to standard Bloomsdale

  • Cold‑hardy and reliable in cool weather

  • Thick, crinkled leaves hold up well when cooked

  • Excellent flavor for both fresh and cooked use

  • Popular heirloom for home gardens

This is one of the most widely grown traditional spinach varieties.

🌤️ Growing Conditions

  • Season: Cool‑season crop

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade

  • Soil: Fertile, well‑drained, high in organic matter

  • Soil pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Ideal Temperature: 45–65°F

⚠️ Heat causes bitterness and bolting, even in “long‑standing” types.

🌾 Planting Instructions

  • When to Plant:

    • Early spring as soon as soil can be worked

    • Late summer for fall harvest

    • Can be fall‑planted for early spring harvest in mild winters

  • How to Plant:

    • Depth: ½ inch

    • Spacing: 1 inch apart; thin to 3–4 inches

    • Rows: 12–18 inches apart

🌱 Succession plant every 10–14 days for continuous harvest.

💧 Care & Maintenance

  • Keep soil consistently moist

  • Mulch to keep roots cool

  • Light feeding with compost or balanced fertilizer

  • Shade in late spring extends harvest

🥬 Harvesting

  • Begin harvesting when leaves are 4–6 inches tall

  • Cut outer leaves for a “cut‑and‑come‑again” harvest

  • Harvest whole plant before flower stalks form

❄️ Cold Tolerance

  • Survives light frosts easily

  • Can overwinter under mulch or row covers in cold climates

  • Flavor improves in cool weather

🌿 Companion Plants

  • Peas

  • Radishes

  • Carrots

  • Strawberries

Avoid planting near beets (same pest pressures).
