🌽 Variety Overview

  • Type: Popcorn (heirloom / open‑pollinated)

  • Kernel Color: Deep red to burgundy

  • Ear Size: 4–6 inches

  • Plant Height: 6–7 feet

  • Days to Maturity: ~100–110 days

  • Popped Corn: White to pale yellow, crisp with good expansion

  • Use: Popcorn, fall decoration (before shelling), seed saving

✅ Why Grow Strawberry Color Hulls

  • Beautiful, eye‑catching red kernels

  • Classic popcorn flavor

  • Reliable popping performance

  • Excellent for home gardens and heirloom collections

  • Can be used ornamentally before shelling

This variety is often chosen as much for appearance as for eating quality.

🌤️ Growing Conditions

  • Season: Warm‑season crop

  • Sun: Full sun (8+ hours)

  • Soil: Fertile, well‑drained soil

  • Soil pH: 6.0–6.8

  • Planting Soil Temp: At least 60°F

⚠️ Popcorn is very frost sensitive—plant after last frost.

🌾 Planting Instructions

  • When to Plant:

    • Late spring once soil has fully warmed

  • How to Plant:

    • Depth: 1–1½ inches

    • Spacing: 10–12 inches apart

    • Rows: 30–36 inches apart

    • Plant in blocks (minimum 4 rows) to ensure good pollination

🚫 Isolation Required:
Keep isolated from sweet corn and other corn varieties to prevent cross‑pollination.

💧 Care & Maintenance

  • Water consistently, especially during tasseling and ear fill

  • Side‑dress with compost or balanced fertilizer at knee height

  • Weed early—young corn is easily stressed

🌽 Harvesting

  • Leave ears on stalks until husks are dry and brown

  • Harvest once kernels are fully hard

  • Finish drying indoors with good airflow for 2–4 weeks

🍿 Popping & Storage

  • Optimum kernel moisture: 13–14%

  • Test pop a small batch before long‑term storage

  • Store kernels in airtight containers

  • Flavor improves after a short curing period

🌿 Companion Plants

  • Beans

  • Squash

  • Pumpkins

(Avoid planting near tomatoes.)
